Be aware most are not dewaxed, so if you’re using a top coat you need to do a de-waxing process. I‘ve used alcohol based dyes to tint shellac (Behlen Solar-Lux). As long as the powdered dyes dissolve okay in the alcohol, I wouldn't worry about grinding them finer. You may want to strain the dye after mixing to remove any undissolved "chunks" of the dye.
